Brian Eno Urges Backing to Send Together for Palestine Lullaby to UK Christmas No 1.
A campaign is aiming to send a traditional song from Palestine to the top of the UK charts. The effort seeks to deliver assistance to people in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian cultural expression.
An Opportunity for Solidarity and an "Surprise Victory"
Composer and producer Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the single 'Lullaby' represents a moment to show solidarity with Palestinians this festive season. He acknowledged the potential for an unexpected chart success.
“That would be amazing if that happened, yes,” he commented. “I won't be completely disheartened if it doesn’t, Christmas singles are a unique phenomenon.”
Powerful Theme of Freedom and Dignity
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the adaptation of a traditional lullaby called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's powerful central theme.
“The song holds a profound significance for countless listeners,” Barghouti explained. “It’s basically saying that I would prefer a dignified death than spend my life without freedom. This is the primary message of the song; we seek to lead a respectful existence that we deserve as Palestinians.”
Recording Origins and Contributing Musicians
The single was laid down following a large-scale benefit event held in the autumn. Initially planned to be performed and recorded live, the rendition was shelved during the concert due to the event running long.
The diverse array of performers contributing to Lullaby features a selection of prominent voices from the music world. All were part of the earlier concert, which managed to collect a considerable total for relief efforts.
Production and Release
Lullaby was produced by a group of music creators. The single blends a combination of the original Arabic with new English lyrics.
The group managing the project have stated that their aim is to raise as much as possible for a specific fund. These donations will be allocated to Palestinian causes through an partnering humanitarian organization.
“We don’t have a fixed goal,” a spokesperson commented. “We’ll go for as much as possible. Of course, the higher the total, the greater the impact. It all goes out to the people of Gaza.”
The situation in the territory was noted for its profound destruction, with a overwhelming percentage of buildings reportedly levelled or seriously harmed.
“In that context, a handful of millions doesn’t make a massive dent. But I think what truly matters is first of all making this cause better known and showing there’s another side to the story.”
The song is set to be released at the end of the week. Additionally, a video of the charity concert will be made available for streaming on a digital service from mid-December.
