The British tennis star secured the most notable win of his professional journey by rallying from a lost first set to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory signifies Norrie's initial success over a reigning world number one.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the newest English competitor in the record books to overcome a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I lost in the opening stage of qualies here. I just tried to enjoy my game in the closing months of the year. To get a victory like this, it's the greatest win of my career, my first win over the top player and arguably the most confident player in the sport right now."

The British player, seeded 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 straight Masters 1000 wins, which marked the best series of results in the Spaniard's developing career.

The top seed seemed to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he eased past the initial stanza. However, Norrie gradually battled back into contention by executing with improved accuracy and engaging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding points. His unceasing steadiness and dependability steadily left its mark.

During large parts of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked especially struggling striking his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for most of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 mistakes. Across the net, Norrie gave his opponent minimal unforced errors, maintaining his consistency, fitness and power all match while delivering effective serves and picking his spots to advance inside the baseline and attack well.
