The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
