In spite of Overwhelming Achievement, Clair Obscur Developers Plan to Keep Studio Small
The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't just an impressive GOTY contender, it’s also an enormous sales triumph. Developer the development team along with publisher their publishing partner revealed that this title topped 5 million units in sales, this is even with it being a day-one release through the Game Pass service.
The game's performance was a surprise for the team. I firmly believed that we would have a solid title that would meet reasonable market performance,” a key executive commented.
A technical director remarked this title's critical score, now standing at 93, was “maybe the biggest shock to the team versus what we anticipated and the final result proved to be. Once it was published everybody in the studio celebrated excitedly. It was really frantic.”
This triumph prompted work on a free update for the title including novel settings, foes, plus epic encounters, as announced will release within the “upcoming month[s]”.
Nevertheless, as the title expands, it's unlikely the studio to grow. Our team includes an excellent group guided by a visionary director with a clear direction for our work and future concepts. We'd like to keep the close-knit size that led to our success then develop large projects one by one,” the producer said.
Their team size generated significant conversation following launch. Some developers, such as the famed director, looked at Sandfall’s team as a perfect example for a studio. Despite being truly compact versus large developers, one glance at the game's credits indicates dozens of people were involved; the French studio contracted a Korean team to work on gameplay animations, to illustrate.
“We plan to recruit slightly more certainly when facing a future production surge in the coming years,” the producer stated. “But I would see rather a creative atelier of a few really talented people that create collective masterpieces.” It was stated that Sandfall’s vision as a studio “aims to keep the successful elements that enabled this success from the start.”
While it may be premature for the studio to say specifically about future projects — believe me, I attempted to learn more — they are certain what’s at its core. “The turn-based aspect, forms the foundation of what we built,” a developer said. “It's still premature to be able to tell our next interests, but it's important also to stay true to the DNA of studio featuring rich storytelling and the interesting gameplay that drives our passion.”
The developer added that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 began with the visionary developing his passion title. We aspire that's something will be repeated with upcoming games.”
