Israelis mark two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
People have come together throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal memorials until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of people killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, due to differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict management of the region
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until every captive are released not a single person will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home again, we can relax once more. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Activist a participant explained: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israeli citizens want the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Every second we look at the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated two more dead people had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medics stated.
