New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
