New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
