The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of the state is enduring dryness. This milestone follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened wildfire risks and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Map Indicates Zero Dryness

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker confirmed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This shift was driven by weeks of heavy precipitation that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes far beyond their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to significant overflow, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were considered abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

However, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions is not the same as having no water worries. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Even as the official status shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance for the coming seasons.
